Podiatry
* Podiatrists (also known as Chiropodists) diagnose and treat abnormalities of the lower limb.
* If you suffer from diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis you are at a higher risk of developing foot problems.
What does the service do?
We are a community based service which provides foot care to the people of Newcastle.
Treatment options may include:
- Foot health advice to clients and carer
- Referral for foot surgery
- Referral for nail surgery
- The study of how we walk (biomechanical assessment)
- Appliance manufacture (e.g. insoles)
- Footwear advice
- Treatment by podiatrist
- Treatment by podiatry assistant
- Diabetes assessment
The services are available to:
- Older people
- People with visual impairment who experience difficulty caring for their feet
- People with foot problems associated with diabetes
- People with neurological conditions
- People with arthritis
- People with peripheral vascular disease
- Children with gait and developmental problems
- People requiring specialized or surgical intervention for nail conditions
- People with joint replacements of the hip and knee.
Where is the podiatry service provided?
The service is provided:
- In people’s homes
- At G.P surgeries
- Hospitals
- Health centres
- Clinics
If you are coming for an appointment please wear socks or hosiery which you can easily remove and wear the footwear you most often use. A relative or carer is welcome to attend appointments with you if you think you need some support.

To access the service please contact your local G.P surgery who will refer you.
