Interpreting service

The Newcastle interpreting service provides high quality interpreting services to help with communications between professionals (doctors, nurses and other health professionals) and patients, families and carers who are unable to communicate using English.

We provide interpreting services for over 40 languages. For languages that are not available locally, we can arrange a telephone interpreting service which covers 150 languages.

We are the major provider of interpreters for health and local authorities in the following areas:

  • Newcastle
  • North Tyneside
  • Northumberland
  • Gateshead
  • South Tyneside
  • County Durham

The service is the biggest provider of interpreters in the North East region. In the last three years, we have provided for 120,000 bookings, 60% of the total public sector demand for interpreting services in the North East.

Our interpreters have passed through a strict recruitment procedure and are trained professionals who follow a code of practice and observe strict confidentiality.

How can I access the service?

Patients who require interpreting services access the service through a health professional (doctor, GP, nurse etc) who will organise an interpreter on your behalf. Please let your GP know if you need an interpreter.

We accept bookings only from authorised staff from organisations which have registered as users with us.

Interpreters are available 24 hours, 7 days/week. User organisations can book via fax or phone. Urgent requests are confirmed within one hour. Non urgent requests are confirmed within 24 hours.

A handbook is available for professional users when they register with the service.
