Health trainers gain award in tackling health inequalities

Health trainers with their awards

Sep 09, 2008 09:00 AM

A group of health trainers in Newcastle are amongst the first in the country to have achieved a new award aimed at tackling health inequalities.

The health trainers were awarded the new City & Guilds level three certificates, developed by the Department of Health.

Ann Dymyd, health trainer programme manager, said: “Congratulations go to the health trainers who have worked very hard to achieve this new qualification. It is a significant achievement as the course demanded high levels of hard work, commitment and study.

“This valuable qualification not only benefits the individuals themselves but the people who live in the local communities where the health trainers are based.

“The health trainers do an excellent job in contributing to our ongoing work in tackling health inequalities across Newcastle and helping those most in need to lead healthy lives.”

Local MP Jim Cousins presented the certificates to the health trainers who are helping people in deprived areas of the city to get healthier and take more exercise.

Mr Cousins also cut the ribbon to open HealthWORKS’ new office premises and a local meeting resource in Elswick Road, in the west end of Newcastle.

HealthWORKS Newcastle, which employs the health trainers, works in partnership with Newcastle Primary Care Trust and Newcastle City Council to provide local residents with better health as well as an opportunity for them to acquire skills and employment.

The group were part of 40 health trainers from North East health services who have achieved the certificate.
