About us

Chris Reed - chief executive of Newcastle PCTNewcastle PCT is responsible for planning and commissioning (buying) health services for the city’s 271,000 residents.

We make sure that people can access services such as GPs, district nursing, hospital treatment, mental health services, screening programmes, dentists, pharmacists and opticians.

In 2008/09 we spent just over £459 million planning, commissioning and providing primary and community health care services, and commissioning secondary care and specialist services.

Our main service providers are Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust and North East Ambulance Service NHS Trust.

We also have a preventative role to improve the general health of the local population and to reduce the likelihood of people becoming ill. This involves raising awareness of health issues, running health improvement initiatives and encouraging local residents to take better care of themselves.

In Newcastle there are 34 general practices, 50 dental practices, 61 community pharmacies and 48 optical practices.

We have shared management arrangements with North Tyneside PCT and Northumberland Care Trust. This means there is one chief executive and one executive team working across the three organisations. The integrated management arrangement is called NHS North of Tyne.

Our main headquarters are based at Bevan House, Newcastle Great Park.

The newly integrated Newcastle and North Tyneside community health provider arm management team (NHS Newcastle and North Tyneside Community Health) are located separately – to reflect the commissioning and provider split – at Hedley Court in North Shields and Benfield Road in Newcastle. We employ approximately 1,600 people.

We are one of 12 primary care organisations in the North East and we work into NHS North East Strategic Health Authority, which is our link to the Department of Health and national policy making. We work closely with our local hospital trusts, mental health trust and ambulance service, and with our local authority Newcastle City Council and the community and voluntary sector.
